City, time and ...

It was yesterday, when I went to the Observation deck in Melbourne, CBD (recommended by my friend Pooya) and I could have a quite different experience of the city. Then I could quite understand what Siegfried Gideon's 1941 called the fourth dimension in Architecture i.e. time and movement. Not only people, buildings, trams and trains etc seems different, but also you can experience different sounds and motions. Now have a look at this painting by Robert Delaunay 1885-1941France inspired by Eiffel Tower.

Have a look at Melbourne from the Rialto Towers!

Jane Jacobs

For those who are concern about human dimension of urban design , Jane Jacobs (1916-2006) is a very familiar character.

Her book "The death and life of great American cities" was one of those books that has changed the history of urban planning and can be considered as a strating point of departure for promoting humane dimensions of the cities.

I was actually planning to visit her, next month in Toronto, Canada but I became very upset when I realized that she just passed away April 26, 2006 .

We are greatly saddened by Jane Jacobs' death , but confident that her infectious love for cities will be carried on by many followers far into the future. We will miss her dearly.

Introduction

Urbatecture.Why?
When I was doing my Master in Architecture, I had a different attitude toward Urban design. From my point of view urban design was mainly concern about some general issues without considering the importance of architecture. Now I have to say, Architecture and Urban design are two wings of a uniqe bird.To have a livable city we should have a beatiful architecture as well as innovative urban design.
